The average bass fisherman has a boat payment, a subscription to Bassmaster Magazine, and follows the masses in terms of where he fishes and what he throws. I'm not judging or knocking that model of recreation. I'm glad that they do it. It keeps them off of the creeks I like to fish from my kayak.
Just as the smallmouth expanded from their native range, kayak fishing has been spreading across the country to rivers and reservoirs. The nation's saltwater fisheries have been permeated by kayak anglers for several years now. The ability to fish where motored boats can not, along with money saved at the gas pump has attracted many redfish, striped bass, and even tarpon anglers.
Those who pursue largemouth and smallmouth are starting to catch on. The growth in freshwater kayak fishing I have witnessed in the last decade came about through two communities of river smallmouth anglers.
Early in my using the kayak to catch river and creek smallmouth, a member of the Potomac River Smallmouth Club www.prsc.org peppered me with questions as I dragged my kayak up an upper Potomac River access point.
